Prevention

Keeping pollution out of the ocean is a lot easier than cleaning it up.  Here are some tips to help reduce the amount of waste we generate.

  • buy in bulk (less packaging)
  • use waste-friendlier packaging
  • fix leaky cars right away
  • keep septic tanks maintained
  • don't use pesticides on plants
  • use rechargeable batteries
  • re-use bags, gift bags, and straws
  • buy items that are already used

Disposal

Recycling, re-purposing, and composting are some of the ways we can re-use our waste, so it never even reaches the water.  Here are some things we can do:

  • compost food waste
  • recycle motor oil
  • donate used but serviceable things to charity instead of throwing them away
  • clean up behind pets
  • recycle glass, paper, aluminum, and plastic
  • don't pour fat down the drain
  • dispose of electronics properly

Conservation

Conserving water indoors helps by reducing the load on septic tanks and sewage treatment plants.  Outdoors, less water waste translates to less runoff.

  • don't let the water run while brushing teeth or washing hands
  • use a high-efficiency showerhead
  • run the dishwasher or clothes washer only when full
  • steam vegetables rather than boil
  • repair leaks right away
  • use a method other than running water to thaw food
  • don't flush things you should trash
  • water the lawn in the morning
